So you recently graduated college and you are wanting to know how to apply for a job.

You have probably already tackled the first hurdle, which is writing a stellar resume, and you are now thinking that you want to get some tips on how to properly apply for a new job or get started on your career field of choice.

Indeed, writing a resume is extremely important. However, there is one important task that you must accomplish in order to really make a good first impression with the companies to which you are applying. When applying for a job, you will need to stand out in a really big crowd.

Let’s face it. Unless you have a steady career under your belt where you worked with a few different companies and have a tenured performance record under your belt, your resume is going to look very similar to every other college student that is seeking employment in the job market.

Here are 3 big mistakes college graduates make when figuring out how to apply for a job:

Writing 1 generic resume (without customization)
Not following up with your job applications
NOT including a well written, original cover letter
Writing a Cover Letter for a College Graduate

If you want to know how to properly apply for a job, you must have a well written introductory letter. And this cover letter must be original!

If you do a search online, you will see thousands of pre-formatted cover letter examples that many people will use to plug in some quick facts and send out to potential employers.

However, you will want to use a cover letter to go above and beyond your resume to show that you are a great candidate for an interview. As I mentioned earlier, most college graduates resumes, though written and formatted differently, will say the same things:

you succeeded with a large class load
you have a great GPA
you volunteered with various organizations
you may have had an internship
Boring.

You really need to stand out from the competition. And here is a tip: most college students do not know how to apply for a job and that includes including a cover letter!

Think about it for a moment. Out of 100 hundred resumes submitted, only about 25% of the applicants include a letter.

Do you want to be in the top 25% or the lower 75%?

The good news is though, that this type of letter is very easy to write, and only has about 3 paragraphs.

By doing this one simple task, you will show your future employers how professional you truly are and that when it comes to applying for a job, you are a well-deserved expert and a job interview is in your future!

Good luck!
